I think I know why Hank said "if the creek don't rise". I went to the family cemetery on the homeplace of my great-grandparents in Lawrence County, Tennessee. There was a small creek which, if it was overflowing, it would have been impossible to leave home to go anywhere. That must have been what Hank meant--if the creek was flooded, it was impossible to go anywhere! Sincerely, Lucinda M. Beddow

I think Hank Williams was without a doubt the best songwriter in Country music and one of the best songwriters in American popular music, period. But...he didn't write this song...the original was by Emmett Miller. He was famous for mainly performing in blackface shows which of course by today's s
tandards would be considered very racist...
